Golden Joystick Award Winners 2020

Fri Jul 16 2021

The 38th Golden Joysticks took place as a socially distanced online ceremony

Almost unbelievably the first Golden Joystick Awards ceremony was way back in 1983 when Game of the Year was Spectrum classic, Jetpac. That makes the Joysticks by some margin the oldest such institution in video games. Comparative stripling, The Game Awards may have stolen its thunder in recent years to become the de facto Oscars of video games, but as far as historical context goes, there will only ever be one winner.

Voted on by the gaming public in the majority of categories, The Golden Joystick is truly a popularity contest at heart, and last night’s big winner was the horrifying yet gripping PlayStation exclusive, The Last of Us Part 2, which walked away with five awards. Its developer, Naughty Dog also won Studio of the Year, capping a very good night for them.

Amongst the twenty categories, there weren’t too many surprises. Best Multiplayer game went to Fall Guys, while Among Us took the critic-voted Breakthrough Award, and No Man’s Sky won Best Game Expansion - given the vast and ongoing wave of free content it’s enjoyed over the last four years, that’s entirely fair. Minecraft didn’t leave empty handed either, winning the Still Playing award, something many PlayerLands visitors will know first hand.
